Prof. Theodore Matikas – Principal Investigator

Prof. Matikas specializes in the development of structural health monitoring methodologies for the quantification of damage and life prediction of materials and structures under complex mechanical (LCF/HCF, FOD, TMF, fretting fatigue), thermal, environmental, diffusion and other loading conditions. Research interests include: aging structures in aerospace, nuclear, civil, cultural heritage and biomedical engineering applications; development of advanced NDE methods (ultrasonics, acoustic emission, acoustic microscopy, nonlinear acoustics, IR thermography, electrical methods, diffraction techniques, interferometric techniques) for real-time evaluation of damage in metallic alloys, coatings, metal and ceramic matrix composites, smart and multi-functional materials, nanocomposites, phononic metamaterials, and cementitious materials. Dr. Ioannis Psarobas – Senior Researcher  

 Phononics expert (Theoretical & computational Condensed Matter Physics)

Dr. Psarobas has produced over the years outstanding research in the fields of microparticle photophysics, nonlinear optics, acoustics, theoretical and applied physics & mechanics, photonic, phononic, phoXonic crystals and spectral-gap materials by design. He produced well-utilized computer codes used by the international scientific community, especially on multiple optical and acoustic scattering. One of his innovations was to adapt the well-established theoretical computations and tricks of electronic band structure to the field of classical spectral-gap materials (co-author of the LMS method). He is considered one of the founding and leading experts in the field of phononic crystals. He is also affiliated with the Department of Physics of the University of Athens.
